Melvin D Nix Artist Bio
Melvin D. Nix is a Charlotte, North Carolina–based visual artist whose work blends spiritual symbolism, Southern storytelling, and contemporary fine‑art techniques. Originally from Greenville, Mississippi, Nix creates expressive watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings that explore themes of Black identity, resilience, mental health, and personal transformation. His art reflects the cultural richness of the American South while offering a modern, introspective perspective rooted in healing and human potential.
A self‑taught painter and Arts & Science Council Emerging Creator Fellow (2024), Nix is an active member of the Charlotte art community and took formal training at the North Carolina Academy of Art (2024). His work has been featured in exhibitions in Charlotte, including Hart Witzen Gallery and Stormwater Studios in South Carolina. His first solo show was held at The Pauline Tea Bar & Apothecary, followed by Nordstrom's Art Lounge at SouthPark Mall, and the African American Atelier in Greensboro. His 2025 Atelier exhibit, Seeds of Change, highlighted his signature use of seed metaphors and reiki‑infused canvases to symbolize growth, possibility, and spiritual awakening.
Nix’s paintings are known for their vivid color, layered symbolism, and narrative depth. Drawing from his Mississippi roots and his lived experience as a Black artist in the South, he creates artwork that invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys of resilience and renewal. Through community‑engaged projects, public art, and studio practice, Nix continues to shape a distinctive voice within contemporary Southern art.
